August 2006
To the new residents I would like to
welcome you to the best residential community in Brisbane. For
those who are not familiar with the Mandalay Progress
Association (MPA) it began over 30 years ago,
I recently had a meeting with Councillor Jane Prentice to
discuss issues concerning residents of Mandalay. Issues raised
included upgrading and repair of play equipment in both parks,
future recreational events and the repair of the boat ramp in
the River Park. The boat ramp has now been repaired and the
other items are under discussion.
Proposed activities for the residents are a BCC-sponsored film
night in the park and a Picnic in The Park event, with a band
and fireworks, to be held in October. Sponsors are presently
being sought for this event.
August has been designated as "annual subscription month". You
can put your $10 in the envelope provided with the tear off
slip, and put it in the locked letter boxes at 9 River Park
Place or 28 Michelangelo St. Committee members will also door
knock to collect the subs.
Subscriptions placed in the letter boxes by 31 August 2006 will
go in a draw to win a carton of crown lager, or 6 bottles of
wine.
The subscriptions are used to fund the running costs of the
Association as set out in the Annual report, so your
contribution is very important to the continuation of the
Association.
The current committee is an eclectic bunch—enthusiastic and
community minded. Recently the Association has encountered some
negative feedback. A list of committee members is at the end of
this newsletter If you have issues or suggestions please feel
free to contact a member. We live in a unique area and have in
place an incorporated Association to liase with local and
government agencies as issues arise. Your support is important.
The inaugural habitat meeting was held on 7 May in the Biambi
Yamba Park with an enthusiastic group of local residents under
the guidance of local environmental scientist, Chris Sanderson.
Warren Fletcher, President of MPA continues to make a slow
recovery and is to begin rehabilitation shortly. Warren has
contributed so much to the Association for many years and we all
wish him well.
