Movie in the Park
I have asked Cr Jane Prentice, if we could have “Movie in the
Park” on Saturday Night 13th October 2007.
I am waiting to have a meeting with the projectionist, who will
decide on the best location in the park to hold the event.
The plan is to combine our traditional picnic in the park in the
afternoon with movie in the park at night fall.
Due to popular demand we will try to arrange to have two Mister
Balloons present for this event. Last year he was a huge success
with parents and children.
Fitness in the Park
At the moment, I am waiting to hear back from "Active and
Healthy" team at BCC who will be responsible for organising the
fitness classes at our local park.
The first class of tai chi, pilates and aerobics will be free.
Local residents will have the opportunity to continue these
classes by negotiating timings and costs with the trainer
direct.
Please check the community notice board if you are interest as
this event will be advertised as soon as we are notified of
date.
Play Equipment in the Parks
I have had further correspondence with Cr Jane Prentice about
the playground equipment in both parks.
There is a new head of the Parks Division for the Western
Region. Cr Jane Prentice has advised that upgrading our parks’
play equipment is at the top of her budget’s wish list.
As you are aware, the MPA has been pushing for upgrades to the
local parks for 5 years now with no firm commitment from BCC.
If there is still no firm dates about the park upgrades in the
next couple of months, the MPA has decided to take up this issue
with the Lord Mayor.
Mandalay Habitat Group
The Mandalay Habitat Group (MHG) had a very successful working
bee on Sunday morning 3rd June 2007.
About 20 local residents attended the working bee which focused
on weed control around the lagoon. We all were amazed by the
large amount of work achieved in three hours.
Thanks to those residents who participated in the working bee,
the MPA put on a sausage sizzle with cold soft drinks and light
beer for the participants.
The MHG has requested more equipment from the BCC for the next
working bee. Please support this worthwhile event which is
scheduled to occur in late July.
Look out for the next working sign on the community notice
board.

Keep Fig Tree Pocket Green Campaign
Have you sent your letter to the Lord Mayor?
Download the letter template from the MPA website at
www.mandalay.org.au!
The deadline is 1st July 2007.
In the last newsletter, I mentioned that The Queensland Cerebral
Palsy League has decided to redevelop the Seven Oaks site. A new
smaller centre will be built and the spare land will be
redeveloped for about 40 new residential houses.
Vehicle access to this new residential estate will be via
Jesmond Road. A bike track and foot path will be available from
Fig Tree Pocket Road to Jesmond Road, allowing Mandalay
residents to access Lone Pine with ease.
The reason why I am requesting all residents to write to the
Lord Mayor is to ensure that BCC enforces that 10m vegetation
corridor rule outlined in the Fig Tree Pocket Local Plan. If
not, these houses will back straight onto Fig Tree Pocket Road.
Instead of trees we would most likely have row after row of
unsightly high fences which would spoil the unique character of
our community.
Every letter counts! Please help the MPA pressure the BCC to
enforce the 10m vegetation corridor rule along Fig Tree Pocket
Road, so there is natural buffer to keep the character in Fig
Tree Pocket intact.
In the Fig Tree Pocket Local plan (Brisbane City Plan Volume 1
Chapter 4 Page 320i) it states:
“P2 The landscape character of the Low Density Housing Land Use
must be maintained and enhanced.”
“A2.1 Landscape treatment in a 10m corridor along Fig Tree
Pocket Road, Jesmond Road, Thiesfield Street, Cubberla Street
and Ormsby Street incorporates the retention of existing mature
native vegetation.”
“A2.4 Landscape concept plans details the landscaping treatment
along streets/roads mentioned in A2.1, including at least the
following:
• trees planting at irregular spacing
• grouping or clumping of trees
• occasional views of built form through landscaped area
• provision of service (e.g. footpaths) meandering amongst
existing mature vegetation
• use of colours/materials for footpaths/cycle paths sensitive
to landscape character “
In the past the BCC has failed to enforce this rule on recent
developments in Fig Tree Pocket, disappointing many local
residents. Given that this development is next to the Lone Pine
Tree Plantation and opposite the Pony Club, it would be an
eyesore if the council does not uphold this rule.
Help keep Fig Tree Pocket Green
The MPA wants Mandalay residents to pressure the BCC by sending
letters to Lord Mayor Campbell Newman, and Deputy Lord Mayor
David Hinchliffe to enforce the 10m vegetation corridor rule on
this development.
I have been told that if they receive 50 letters plus it will be
classed as a major issue and action will be taken. To assist Cr
Jane Prentice track this issue please send her a duplicate of
your letter and /or cc her in on your email:

You can download a letter template from the homepage from the
MPA website at www.mandalay.org.au.
Fill in your details and add any additional concerns about 10m
vegetation corridor rule along Fig Tree Pocket Road. This should
take no longer than 10 minutes.
Many thanks to residents who have already sent letters. Together
we can keep Fig Tree Pocket green.
