It’s “Clean-up Australia” time again
When: Sunday, 5th March at 8:30 a.m.
Where: The River Park
What to bring: hat, sunglasses, suitable footwear and rubber
gloves
Please come and support this worthwhile event. Bring a hat,
gloves and sun-screen. Bring the family and friends and
“spring-clean” our lovely park.
A sausage sizzle will be held at the conclusion provided by the
Association fol-lowed by the first special meeting of the
Mandalay Habitat Group (see over)
Other dates to remember: Annual General Meeting - 13 March
Our Annual General Meeting will be held at the Cubberla Hall at
the Fig Tree Pocket State School on Monday 13th March 2006 at
8:00 p.m. The attendance at this meeting will determine the
future activities of the Association. The membership is small
and the Committee has insufficient numbers to collect
subscriptions and to organise events such as the Picnic in the
Park, an event which has been enjoyed by so many in the past.
Please attend the AGM and ensure that the Association continues
to remain active. Remember we live in a unique area. Let’s keep
it that way.

The Mandalay Habitat Group
The Mandalay area of Fig Tree Pocket is a unique place. We have
two parks, one with an out-standing urban wetland, the other
along the banks of the Brisbane River. We have over 116 species
of birds, as well as assorted mammals, reptiles and frogs. More
than that, we have the potential to make things even better.
The Mandalay Habitat Group is the result of an idea on how to
make this area even more special. Starting with a special
meeting after the Mandalay Progress Associations Clean Up
Australia Day activity and BBQ on 5th of March, we hope to hold
regular bird walks, information days and eventually tree
plantings. This is a fun way of learning more about the area in
which you live, as well as a chance to help make it a better
place to be.
Did you know:
• Biambi Yumba park is due to be “upgraded” starting this year.
The Mandalay Habitat Group could be in a position to guide these
works to have a positive outcome for the community.
• There have been at least 68 species of birds recorded in
Biambi Yumba park for the last 3 years and 116 species of birds
for the whole Mandalay area.
• We have 2 species of native frogs that frequent the area; the
Eastern Dwarf Sedge Frog and the Striped Marsh Frog. There may
be the potential to re-introduce new native species to the area
in the future.
Things we can make a difference on:
• Cane toads infesting Biambi Yumba lagoon
• Weeds along the riverbank and in revegetation areas
• Teaching our local kids more about nature
• Helping the Council make Biambi Yumba Park a place we are
happy with.
