The Mandalay Habitat Group 7 May 2006
The Mandalay Habitat Group originally scheduled to meet after
Clean-up Australia was cancelled due to bad weather.
It will now be held at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday 7 May at Biambi
Yumba park. There will be an introductory bird watching exercise
followed by a sausage sizzle.
Annual subscriptions for the Mandalay Progress Association will
also be collected.
The Mandalay area of Fig Tree Pocket is a unique place. We have
two parks, one with an outstanding urban wet-land, the other
along the banks of the Brisbane River. We have over 116 species
of birds, as well as assorted mammals, reptiles and frogs. More
than that, we have the potential to make things even better.
The Mandalay Habitat Group is the result of an idea on how to
make this area even more special and we hope to hold regular
bird walks, information days and eventually tree plantings. This
is a fun way of learning more about the area in which you live,
as well as a chance to help make it a better place to be.
Did you know:
Biambi Yumba park is due to be upgraded, starting this year.
The Mandalay Habitat Group could be in a position to guide these
works to have a positive out-come for the community.
There have been at least 68 species of birds re-corded in
Biambi Yumba park for the last 3 years and 116 species of birds
for the whole Mandalay area.
We have 2 species of native frogs that frequent the area; the
Eastern Dwarf Sedge Frog and the Striped Marsh Frog. There may
be the potential to re-introduce new native species to the area
in the future.
Things we can make a difference on:
Cane toads infesting Biambi Yumba lagoon
Weeds along the riverbank and in revegetation areas
Teaching our local kids more about nature
Helping the Council make Biambi Yumba Park a place we are
happy with.
