Mandalay
Newsletter May 2007
To the new residents I would like to welcome you to the best
residential community in Brisbane.
I would like to thank the local residents, Cr Jane Prentice and
Ronan Lee MLA who attended the Annual General Meeting in March.
A number of local issues were raised at the meeting, with new
residents joining the MPA committee for the first time. Their
new ideas and energy will be most welcomed.
I recently had a meeting with Cr Jane Prentice to discuss issues
concerning residents of Mandalay. Issues raised included:
upgrading and repair of play equipment in both parks,
local bus service and
future recreational events.
Movie in the Park
A film night in the park will be the major MPA event this
year. Cr Jane Prentice has agreed to allocate money to this
event from her BCC local community fund. A couple of residents
wish to sponsor the childrens entertainment for that night.
The date of the movie night will be announced shortly after
further consultation with the BCC.
Fitness in the Park
BCC has allocated funding to promote fitness activities
within the local community. Cr Jane Prentice has agreed to
arrange for Tai Chi and Aerobic classes in the park. The first
classes will be free and local residents who wish to continue,
can make arrangements about timings and cost with the instructor
or trainer. The date of the first classes will be announced soon
after more consultation with Cr Jane Prentice.
Play Equipment in the Parks
Biambi Yamba is classed as a major park and its master plan
will be released soon. It will detail the improvements to be
made to the park, including new playground equipment and a small
toilet block.
I have discussed River Park improvements with Cr Jane Prentice.
At the moment there is no major upgrade planned. I have asked
for more park benches and tables to be placed in the park.
Mandalay Habitat Group
The Mandalay Habitat Group (MHG) is apart of the Cubberla
Witton Catchments Network and has received BCC funding for
equipment and training.
The MHG has two functions to inform residents about the wildlife
in the area and organise working bees to help the native
vegetation in Biambi Yamba Park.
Unfortunately Biambi Yamba Park has substantial foreign
vegetation and weeds problems which will need ongoing attention.
The first working bee on Sunday 11 March was bit
disappointing with only 6 residents attending. But we managed
however to plant 150 native ground plants in the park.
The next working bee will be in May and I encourage you to
attend. Our aim is to target weeds around the lagoon.
For more information please contact Col Williams on 3378 9667.
Lone Pine
Cr Jane Prentice informed us at the AGM, that Lone Pine will be
releasing a master plan, and it appears that they have long term
plans to stay in the area.
Seven Oaks Development
The Queensland Cerebral Palsy League has decided to
redevelop the Seven Oaks site. A new smaller centre will be
built, and the spare land will be redeveloped for about 40 new
residential houses.
The MPA is concerned that BCC will again not enforce the 10m
vegetation corridor rule along Fig Tree Pocket Road for the
Seven Oaks site.
In the Fig Tree Pocket Local plan (Brisbane City Plan Volume 1
Chapter 4 Page 320i) it states:
P2 The landscape character of the Low Density Housing Land Use
must be maintained and enhanced.
A2.1 Landscape treatment in a 10m corridor along Fig Tree
Pocket Road, Jesmond Road, Thiesfield Street, Cubberla Street
and Ormsby Street incorporates the retention of existing mature
native vegetation.
A2.4 Landscape concept plans details the landscaping treatment
along streets/roads mentioned in A2.1, including at least the
following:
trees planting at irregular spacing
grouping or clumping of trees
occasional views of built form through landscaped area
provision of service (e.g. footpaths) meandering amongst
existing mature vegetation
use of colours/materials for footpaths/cycle paths sensitive
to landscape character
In the past the BCC has failed to enforce this rule on recent
developments in Fig Tree Pocket, disappointing many local
residents. Given that this development is next to the Lone Pine
Tree Plantation, it would be an eyesore if the council does not
uphold this rule.
Help keep Fig Tree Pocket Green
The MPA wants Mandalay residents to pressure the BCC by
sending letters to Lord Mayor Campbell Newman, and Deputy Lord
Mayor David Hinchliffe to enforce the 10m vegetation corridor
rule on this development.
I have been told that if they receive 50 letters plus it will be
classed as a major issue and action will be taken. To assist Cr
Jane Prentice track this issue please send her a duplicate of
your letter and/or cc her in on your email.
